We were contracted for the installation of James Hardie fiber cement siding and rainscreen.
• 3-story dorm building at a local college in Texas
• 90% of the exterior was James Hardie ColorPlus Siding
It seemed like a quick and simple installation of exterior siding but there were important structural details missing that could have derailed the budget and schedule.
As we were creating our scope of work, we realized that this wasn’t just a simple installation. The rain-screen needed to work as a system.
The siding and rain-screen needed a structural attachment to the building that hadn’t been accounted for in the construction details or planning.
They didn’t have a ton of experience with siding installation or rain-screen systems, and needed an installer who could walk them through every element of the job.
This project ended up with several unique challenges. Because elements of the installation had been missed, or not considered, before we arrived to provide a quote for our part of the project, we were left with some issues.
One example was earlier in the project:
This ended up saving the construction company time and money on the job.
We knew that we had to move beyond simple installers, and step into our role as problem solvers.
We also knew that as a finishing trade we were in a unique position to fix problems that had been overlooked earlier in the build.
Because we have an excellent and very close relationship with the James Hardie rep, we were also able to have the manufacturer on-site several times as needed to help troubleshoot, as well as provide testing data for the proposed solutions.
They got a great install that we are very proud of. One member from the James Hardie team called it the mercedes of siding installs.
We felt we were driving the solutions and the schedule at times. Our ability to adapt and problem solve helped keep the entire project on time and on budget.
