Robert & Ellen's Story

After buying their lake house a few years ago, Robert and Ellen decided to update the exterior look of their vacation getaway.

This meant the installation of new windows, including standard and specialty-shaped ones.

The Project

Robert and Ellen hired a well-reviewed company they found off Google to do the original installs.

But after finding out that they were only comfortable installing the standard windows, they hired us, Preview Construction, for the specialty-shaped ones.

This meant that Robert & Ellen had two crews of installers on the job.

What Changed As The Project Went On?

The original company got to work right away on installing the standard windows. However, once the specialty windows showed up and our crew got to work installing, Robert and Ellen started to notice they were getting two very different levels of installation quality.

Fortunately, they were paying attention to their job.

Robert and Ellen noticed that some of their windows were lying flush against their stucco, and some were sticking out almost an inch further than the trim.

They fired the original company on the spot and hired Preview Construction to install the remainder of all windows — this included replacing the ones that the first team had already installed.

The Biggest Problem

Despite having good reviews on Google, the original team didn’t take the time to assess and approach the job correctly. Instead, they simply removed the existing windows and put the new ones in their place.

How We Approached The Project

Every job is unique.

There’s no blanket approach or installation method that will work for every project.

For example, our process with Robert and Ellen’s lake home was to come out and assess their home first. We do this on every single project.

Fixing the first installer's work

We knew from our original assessment that we would need to cut back the sheetrock on the inside because the new windows were thicker and would stick out further than the original windows.

This allowed for the window to sit at the correct depth on the exterior of their home.

We also cut out the stucco on the outside to allow for four inches of waterproofing tape around three sides of the windows and flexible waterproofing tape on the windowsill.

Our crew also followed up after the installation to make sure that everything was up to our standard and that Robert and Ellen knew how to reach us if they had any questions in the future.

The Ideal Solution

Fortunately, Robert and Ellen spotted the quality differences between the two companies working on their lake house.

The real solution to their problem was to hire an expert installer who would make sure that every window (specialty sized or not) was installed correctly.

Standard-shaped windows do not mean a standard-shaped install.

Robert & Ellen needed a company that would take the time to learn exactly what the job required to be done correctly.

What Robert & Ellen Ended Up With

Despite the extra time and money, it cost to fix the previous company’s installation, in the end, Robert and Ellen ended up with a beautiful installation of their new windows.

They even hired Preview Construction to work with them on the next phase of their exterior remodel.

Our Favorite Part of the Project

Our favorite part as watching Robert and Ellen pay attention and make an informed decision about their home remodel.

They refused to settle on a sub-par installation even though it expanded the scope and timeline of their project.

At the end of the day, they ended up with exactly the quality of work their lake home deserved — top-notch.
